Sometimes you don’t want to play one golf course but 18 different golf course in a day or in one round. Then I have the place for you: Architects Golf Club. This golf course in Phillipsburg, NJ can use the uncommon descriptive word for a golf course: variety. The course’s layout pays homage to the great golf course architects of the past. Each hole varies in style, play, layout, shrubbery, sand trap sand, and greens.
Architects Golf Club Overview:
The course draws from the great likes Donald Ross, Tom Morris, Robert Trent Jose, and more. Each hole’s signage displays information about the designer and the course or specific hole mimicked. I played with two other gentlemen who had not yet experienced the course. We all agreed by the end of the day that we would return. There are some drives that go blind up hill and now we know the layout of the course. Each hole is its own challenge as some holes are doglegs but a plethora of bunkers guard against cutting the corner. We need to talk about the bunkers as they come in all shapes, sizes, depths, and sand types. If you want to score well, avoid the traps but good luck as they are littered liberally around the course.
Another anomaly of Architects Golf Club is the lack of white tees. For those with a teen handicap or higher, I recommend the blue tees.
Architects Golf Club Condition:
I played the course in May as Spring finally arrived. The greens had been aerated but the rest of the course was in fine shape. On my next round, I am sure the trees will add a level of color to the course to elevates it beauty.
The main elements that I noticed were the multitude of sand traps and their wide variety in shape, size, depth, and even sand quality. Each trap was different and made me think over my attack. I need to work on my tight packed sand wedges.
If I ran Architects Golf Club:
The pace of the play came to a nice 4:20 hours but may group and others behind us ended up waiting on several tee boxes. I enjoy the modern round of golf under five hours but a can blame a few tee shots on losing my groove in a holding pattern on the tee box.
I would also put hole layouts on the scorecard. My group ended up pulling up their website on the back nine to learn what was beyond the hill peak were we hitting our drives toward.
Favorite Hole on Architects Golf Club:
The 7th hole is a dog leg right with tree guarding against the cut. That being said, I faded (sliced) my drive over the tree and enjoyed a short approach shot to the green. The traps on guarding the green kept me focused on hitting the green which is well sized. I ended up with a par through more luck than skill.
My Final Say of Architects Golf Club:
The highest praise for me is always if I will return. The answer for Architects Golf Club is yes indeed. This golf course deserves several rounds to enjoy what it offers in the celebration of golf and its important fathers.
