Recently, I played at Heron Glen Golf Club with my dad. It was the first round that we had played together this summer. I enjoy playing with my dad now that I can hit consistently and don’t lose a dozen balls on the Front 9 or my temper on a regular basis. This round was special to me for another reason, I played probably my best golf score despite imploding on the last 3 holes of the day. And I didn’t lose my sh!t.
To start off, I shot a 84 which is awesome! Here are my stats for the day:
- Putts: 29
- GIR: 22%
- FIR: 39%
- Lost balls: 4
- Bunkers: 3
- Bogeys: 4
- Double Bogeys: 4
- Triple Bogey: 1
So by the stats, you see this was not a stellar day of birdies and pars back to back to back. I scrambled like a mad man and putted like a man possessed on greens recently aerated. So how did I play a great round and a crappy round in the same day? Mental fortitude and not letting small mistake snowball into a plethora of snowmen on my scorecard.
Front 9 Golf Score:
Here is the scorecard for the Front 9 on the Grint:

My drives were not accurate but that were not bent in a banana shape. Several of my drives went wide of the fairway by only a yard or two at most. I kept my right elbow in and just missed aim. Felt good.
Lost balls did not penalize me too badly due to Heron Glen’s environmental drop area. Heron Glen is beautiful course because they take care of the nature conservation area. I lost a few balls in these protected area and the course places the drop areas on the other side. It saved me strokes playing by the course’s rules.
Back 9 Golf Score:
Here is the Scorecard for the Back 9:
The last three holes were where the scoring suffered with double bogey, triple bogey, and double bogey. Though the course was fighting back, I did not feel it in my belly. When I get a big number on the scorecard, I usually break out the mental calculator to see how I can save the day and still get interviewed by Sports Center. I accepted a poor shot and moved onto the next shot. This was a new process/feeling to me. I did not realize it was occurring until the round was over. Total Zen Golf moment.
The round went very well because I took it hole by hole, stroke by stroke and played in the now.
How did you achieve your most epic golf round?
