Using Hybrid Clubs with Wedge Style Golf Swing

On every round I play, there will be a question within the first three holes on what club did I just use.  The reply from me or family members(they usually roll their eyes) is

Don’t ask, he uses his hybrids like wedges for everything.

Developing a New Golf Swing

I started playing with this style some time last year.  I found myself not hitting my irons very well and getting frustrated.  I was chopping my irons into the ground or hitting behind the ball when I was trying to hit too hard.  At that time, I had a 4 TaylorMade Rocketballz hybrid and just picked up a 5 of the same brand to replace my 4 and 5 irons.  I started to use the 5 hybrid to hit a 150 yard shot instead of my 7 iron.  And it worked!

I started to slowly use my hybrids for any shot 110 to 200 yards on the fairway.  With practice, I began fine tuning the touch and feel to hit this partial power shots.  Luckily, my driving range practice regime built heavily on wedge practice.

Club Selection with Wedge-like Golf Swing

Now my golf bag contains four hybrid clubs: 4, 5, 6, and 7.  I bought the 7 used over Christmas vacation and utilize its loft for 100 yard shots.  It has a great drop with its 31 degree loft.  I dropped my 5, 6, 8,  and 9 irons.  I held onto the 4 and 7 iron for punch or bump and run work.

Hand Position in Golf Swing

The key to this shot selection is to know how to change your golf swing to get just the right amount of power.  Let’s take a look at my 5 hybrid and where my hands stop in the back swing based on the distance I need:

Is This a Perfect Swing System?

This is not a perfect system and sometimes I tend to over hit the ball.  Despite that I stay with this approach as my scores have dropped and then held consistent.  It also drives people nuts when I drop it on a par 3 using a 5 hybrid.

Give it a try and see if it works for you.  Do you have any unique swing styles that raise eyebrows?
