Teravista Golf Club Course Review

I get to enjoy golf courses in my business life.  The most common experience remains a nice scramble tournament for charity where no one takes it too seriously.  Everyone knows the day will end in a few doors prizes and a good meal.  This gives us time to enjoy the course and the networking under no pressure.  The last course I experienced in this format was Teravista Golf Club in Austin, TX.  The great state of Texas enjoys a rich golf history and I was happy we weren’t playing in the famous Texas heat.

Teravista Golf Club Overview:

Teravista Golf Club sits in the middle of development that exploded out of Austin over the last 20 years.  The course weaves itself through several different housing developments from town houses to very nice houses sitting atop hills over looking the course.  Teravista hole signs are carved into rocks with a lot of style.  I wish they  were positioned by the white tees but that is a common comment on course management around the country.

The golf course area offers a driving, putting, and chipping ranges within a stroll of the club house and pro shop.  I did not see a sand bunker range.  Teravista supplied our breakfast and lunch and both we fine examples of good Texas cuisine and we ate our fills.

There were some holes in which previous knowledge on the layout may have influenced  our club selection.  My foursome encountered a stream across one fairway that was not on the scorecard.  It appeared that a neighbor’s sprinkler broke and had been running for many a long hours creating a new waterway.

Teravista Golf Club Condition:

The day I played Teravista spring still had not yet made up its mind if it was ready to come out and play or not.  The morning temperature hung mourned the low 40s and the ground’s firmness gave long roll to shots.  I imagine when the ground is dry with summer heat the ball can roll for miles.  The fairways and greens were in good shape though we kept seeing breaks that did not exist.

Several holes contain water hazards but I did not find them in challenging areas.  Usually, the water sits in front of a tee box to be driven over or along the side to be avoided.

There must have been rain lately because the sand traps showed sings of hard drainage and were not in good shape.  Luckily since we played scramble, we never played out of a bunker.

If I Ran Teravista:

I played this course under a scramble format and the course management played it under “Par is your friend” format.  This formats limits a foursome score to a maximum of par.  I find this style a cheat on the day because if your foursome does not have at least two balls to choose for a birdie putt there is no point on walking to the green.  Golf courses use this format to ensure a good pace but I think limit to double bogey would do the same without any cost of time.

Favorite Hole on Teravista:

The second hole layout stands out in my mind with its safety net down the right side.  Teravista weaves itself through several types of housing developments and the second hole parallels an assisted living facility.  The hole is a dog leg to the right.  My team over drove the fairway and ended up shooting to the hole between two trees.  The second hole teases a short cut but it requires control to not over drive the fairway at the bend.

Final Say:

Golf courses are abound in the Austin area.  When I return, I will try another to sample what Austin has to offer other.
